Thick Body Type Crochet Doll Tutorial and Pattern

My newest tutorial, and pattern, is out today! This time I made an amigurumi style doll with a realistically shaped, thicker body type. This pattern is so easy to customize to any size doll! This design is similar to my “Realistic Body Doll” pattern I made several years ago, which has a thinner body type. You can find Part 1 of the tutorial at the bottom of the page, or if you like you can find the pattern in my Ravelry storeBuy it now!
I used Aran weight yarn. Worsted weight may be used but you may want to use a smaller hook (like a size B) to maintain the proper tension. I used much less than a skein of Red Heart brand yarn in “Cafe Latte” for my doll, but if you’re making a much larger doll or using a smaller skein, you may need more yarn. You can use pretty much any color in any aran or worsted weight yarn. I used “Cafe Latte” for the doll in the tutorial, and the other doll pictured was made using “Warm Brown”.

I also used a yarn needle and some extra yarn to shape the body. Tutorial for this is coming soon! You can see the difference in the body shape between the 2 dolls pictured; the “Warm Brown” doll (the lighter shade) has been shaped with sewing, and the “Cafe Latte” doll (the darker shade) hasn’t been shaped yet.

I used a wire skeleton made of craft wire to give my doll structure, and an ability to stay in more interesting poses. You can forgo the skeleton if you wish, but if you make the doll’s neck too small without some kind of reinforcement, the head will probably droop, so just add a bit of a wire or a pipe cleaner to the neck.

Crochet Mini Mushroom Charms Tutorial

Mario inspired mini mushroom charms! These are super cute and quick to make, and its a great use for scrap yarn. Instructions for both styles (the one with spots and the one with the skull) given in pattern!

I’ve also made a video tutorial that you can find at the bottom of the page, or on youtube here: https://youtu.be/s6E-c7ByPF0
You can also find the written pattern for this project in my Ravelry storeBuy it now!

I used Red Heart worsted weight yarns in Red, Aran and White to make the red mushroom, and switched out the red for Amethyst to make the purple one, and Spring Green for the green one.

To create these charms, you’ll actually need to use crochet thread weight yarn instead. I kind of prefer to use the worsted weight yarn, though, because of the color variety. I split the Red Heart yarn in half to make crochet thread weight yarn out of worsted weight yarn. You can see how I did this in the video tutorial, but if you want to make your life easier you can skip this step and just use crochet thread, or you could also use embroidery floss.

I also used some black thread to embroider on the eyes, and a metal clasp to turn my mushrooms into charms. You could also use an earring hook, or a jump ring, or a keychain for these charms.

Crochet Flower Patterns

Super simple beginner friendly crocheted flower patterns.  I used craft wire inside all my flower to make them more realistic and able to stand up. A free video tutorial for each of these flowers is coming soon on my Youtube channel. Will update when video is available.

First is the daisy flower. I used 3 colors of Red Heart yarn for my daisies; yellow for the middle of the flower, white for the petals, and spring green for the stem and leaves. Find my daisy flower pattern here: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/daisy-flower-11

Next is the pansy flower. I used 4 colors of Red Heart yarn for my daisies; yellow for the middle of the flower, dark purple for the base of the petals, hot pink for the tops of the petals, magenta for the back petals, and spring green for the stem and leaves. You can use pretty much any color as long as you use a shade of yellow for the middle, a dark color, like black or violet for the base of the petals, and a shade of green for the leaves and stem. Find my pansy flower pattern here: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pansy-flower-5

And finally an amigurumi fire flower inspired by the Mario games. I used 5 colors of Red Heart yarn for my fire flower; white for the face at the middle of the flower, yellow for the base of the petals, red for the tops of the petals, black for the eyes, and spring green for the stem and leaves.
Find my fire flower pattern here: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/fire-flower

I used my flowers to construct a potted plant of each. Tutorial for potted plant is also coming soon, will update as soon as the video is available.

Yoshi Amigurumi Doll Pattern and Free Video Tutorial

Amigurumi Yoshi doll inspired by the Mario games. I tried to make this doll as accurate to the way the character looks in the games as possible, and I think I did a pretty good job. You can find the pattern on Ravelry here: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/yoshi-amigurumi-7
Part 1 of the free video tutorial is at the bottom of this page. Next parts of the video coming soon!
I used Spring Green and White from Red Heart Super Saver for the classic Yoshi color, but of course you can be really creative with this pattern and make yours any color you like. I also made one in Bubblegum pink, and I’m working on one in Royal Blue. I used a size E hook and aran weight yarn, you might be able to use a smaller hook and a thinner yarn, like a light worsted weight and a size B hook, to make an even smaller, cuter doll.
I also used craft wire to make my doll pose-able. You can see from the pictures that this doll holds it’s poses very well. If you’re planning on making this doll for a baby or small child, don’t use any wire in your doll.

Crochet Unicorn Horn Pattern/Video Tutorial

How to crochet a unicorn horn! I made a costume version for myself, and a small doll-sized version for my unicorn amigurumi doll. Find the pony doll I used for my unicorn here: https://youtu.be/1g9OAY6187M

This is the pattern for the costume version. The doll version is just the tip of the costume version. For that one, start with a chain of 8 instead of 24, and then only do the steps highlighted in blue. Video tutorial is available on  my youtube channel, and will be at the bottom of this page.

Costume Unicorn Horn Written Pattern
  1. Ch 24 to create foundation ch. (24 sts total)
  2. Ch 3 for 1st st, into 3rd ch from hk, tc 1. Then, around foundation ch, tc 30 more. Pull just made sts to bottom of ch as far as possible, bunching sts. Continue making progressively shorter sts toward top of horn: htc 32, then pull sts to bottom of foundation ch, bunching sts; dc 32, then pull sts to bottom of ch; hdc 32, then pull sts to bottom of ch; sc 32, bunching sts at bottom of ch, until entire ch is covered by sts and a spiral is formed (160 sts total)
  3. Add a tip to the horn: ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch from hk and rem 2 chs. Sl st around post of last sc on foundation ch to end work, cut off long tail of yarn.
  4. Once spiral is made, use craft wire to keep the horn standing up: twist crocheted spiral around wire, so that wire is threaded through middle of coil. Start at top of horn, to make sure end of wire matches up with tip of horn. To keep spiral in place on wire, pin tip of horn to loop at end of wire. Then begin to twist yarn around wire. Once the wire is threaded through spiral, tighten coil around wire by twisting coil more tightly. At the bottom of the spiral, twist wire into a circle that matches circumference of bottom of horn. Use tail end of yarn to fasten wire in place, and to stitch over any remaining visible wire.

This is a bit of an intermediate to advanced level design. It's fully customizable, and you can find a bunch of hair tutorials for dolls on my channel, to customize your centaur doll even more.

For the doll above, I used “Buff” (Red Heart Super Saver) for the doll upper body, “Aran” (Red Heart Super Saver) for the horse body, “Charcoal” (Red Heart Super Saver) to make the hooves, and a combination of “Charcoal” and “Black” (Red Heart Super Saver) to make the tail and hair.

For the doll below, I used “Heather”(Loops & Threads) for the body, “Rust” (Vanna’s Choice) and “White” (Red Heart Super Saver) for the horse body, “Black” (Red Heart Super Saver) for the hooves and a combination of “Rust”, and “Toast” (Red Heart Soft) for the tail and hair. Crochet Horse Doll Pattern + Free Video Tutorial

Check out my crochet amigurumi style horse doll! The written pattern is available in my Ravelry store here: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/realistic-horse-doll

This is a bit of an intermediate to advanced level design, I'd say. It's easy to customize the size,  shape or color of the horse to your preferences.

Amigurumi generally uses very little yarn, and I used much less than a full skein. I used “Aran” from Red Heart Super Saver for the body, “Charcoal” to make the hooves, and a combination of “Charcoal” and “Black” to make the mane and tail.
