Free Black Widow Spider Crochet Pattern

Materials & Tools:

Aran Weight Yarn, Black (Red Heart Super Saver, “Black”)
  • Aran Weight Yarn, Red (Red Heart Super Saver, “Burgundy”)
  • Crochet Hook, Size “E” (3.5 mm)
  • Pair Of Scissors
  • Yarn Needle
  • For an even smaller size, use crochet thread and a size “B” hook

Abbreviations Used:
  • mag circ: magic circle
  • st: stitch
  • prev: previous
  • ch: chain
  • lp: loop
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • CC: change colors
  • yo: yarn over
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • *: repeat

Rows:

1. To create base: Create mag circ using black yarn. Into mag circ, ch 2 (counts as first st, if desired, mark with st marker). Sc 1 more using black, leave st open and CC to red. Sc 2 using red, leave 2nd red st open and CC to black.

Sc 2 using black, leave 2nd st open and CC to red. Sc 2 using red, leave 2nd red st open and CC to black. Close mag circ. (8 sts total)

2. Continue using black. Inc every st of row (sc 2 times into each st).

Into each red st of prev row, sc only into back lps. Sl st to 1st st of row. Cut off yarn (16 sts total)

3. If desired, cut off long tail of red yarn and outline red sts to create more defined hourglass shape. Sew in remaining ends. Base of spider finished.

4. Continue using black. Note: Every st in this row worked into same st.

To create body cluster: Into top middle st of base (top middle side of hourglass shape—doesn't matter which side is top or bottom), pull up a lp and ch 2 (counts as 1st st). Into the same st, *yo, pull up a lp; pull a lp through 2 lps on hook** so that 2 lps remain on hook (as though working a dc st, but not finishing the st).

Into same st, repeat from * to ** 2 times until 4 lps remain on hook.

Pull a lp through all four lps on hook.

5. To create mandibles: Ch 4. Sl st to 3rd ch from hook. Sl st into next ch. Ch 4 more. Sl st to 3rd ch from hook. Sl st to next ch.
Sl st around leftmost post of sts from prev row (row 4 body cluster).

6. To make legs: *Ch 12 (or more, depending on desired length for legs). Into 2nd ch from hook, sl st. Sl st into remaining chs. Sl st around same post;

ch 14, sl st into 2nd ch from hook and into remaining chs, sl st around same post; ch 14, sl st into 2nd ch from hook, sl st to top middle of base (same st worked into in row 4);

ch 12, sl st into 2nd ch from hook and into remaining chs.** Sl st into next st around base.

Continue around base. Sl st 7 into sts around base before creating spinnerets. (In the pic it says mandibles, it's supposed to say spinnerets)

7. To create spinnerets: (Note: same as creating mandibles) Ch 4. Sl st to 3rd ch from hook. Sl st to next ch. Ch 4 more. Sl st to 3rd ch from hook. Sl st to next ch. Sl st to same st around base where spinnerets begin.
Continue around base. Sl st 7. Repeat process from * to ** mirrored to create final 4 legs. Sl st to same st where mandibles begin. Cut off yarn. Sew in end.
